Back to the 90s! Why Everyone’s Obsessed With Throwback Style, Food and Music in 2025

The 1990s are back, and they’re louder, bolder and more beloved than ever. From Gen Z to nostalgic millennials, pop culture in 2025 is being taken over by vintage food, throwback fashion and a full-blown boy band resurgence.

What started as a few ironic TikTok trends has turned into a full cultural reset. Sales of baggy jeans and crop tops are up 130 percent since 2023, according to retail analytics firm Edited. Online, #90sAesthetic has passed 3 billion views across platforms. Even McDonald’s brought back its retro Happy Meal toys for a limited-edition drop.

It’s not just the clothes. 90s music is everywhere too. Spice Girls, NSYNC and TLC are enjoying a streaming surge. Playlists featuring 90s R&B and pop rack up millions of listens on Spotify. Brands have noticed. Pepsi recently relaunched its 1997-style cans. Fast fashion labels like Urban Outfitters and Zara have entire lines dedicated to the decade.

Food trends are also getting in on the action. Dunkaroos, Pop Rocks and Cosmic Brownies are back in pantries and on menus, sometimes reimagined with organic ingredients or adult twists. In major cities like Miami, London and Tokyo, “retro cafés” serve Surge soda and 3D Doritos as part of curated throwback menus.

Psychologists say it’s no accident. In uncertain times, cultural nostalgia becomes a form of comfort. Dr. Andrea Moore, a cultural psychologist at the University of California, says: “Nostalgia gives people emotional grounding. The 90s feel familiar, playful and safe, especially to those who grew up during that time.”

The revival is big business too. Entire events are themed around the era. The “I Love the 90s” tour now spans three continents. Vintage gaming consoles like the Super Nintendo Classic Edition continue to sell out during peak seasons.

Experts say the cycle will continue. Every generation rediscovers the style and sound of its youth, but the 90s hit a perfect mix of analog cool and digital beginnings. It was the last pre-internet decade, but also the birth of global pop and tech culture.

In 2025, it seems, the past is the present. So dust off that Walkman, pop in a boy band CD and grab a frosted Pop-Tart. The 90s are here… again.
