The New Hollywood Script for 2026: Saudi Investment, Mergers, and Global Power Plays

As Saudi capital flows into Hollywood at unprecedented rates, the entertainment landscape is shifting from creative-driven deals to geopolitically charged investments in 2026.

The film and TV industries are facing a subtle but powerful transformation. While mergers between production houses and tech companies continue, the most significant development in 2026 is the influence of foreign capital, particularly from Saudi Arabia. The kingdom’s Public Investment Fund has invested billions into media firms, gaming platforms, and streaming services in a bid to diversify its economy and redefine its cultural footprint.

According to a December 2025 report by the Los Angeles Times, over $4 billion in Saudi funds were injected into U.S. entertainment ventures in the last 18 months alone. This includes minority stakes in major studios, funding for blockbuster film slates, and partnerships with international distributors.

Critics warn of editorial influence and soft power diplomacy. “This isn’t just about ROI,” said Ana Contreras, a film historian at Columbia University. “It’s about shaping narratives and access. Who funds the stories often shapes what stories get told.”

At the same time, some executives view the influx as necessary to sustain big-budget filmmaking in a fractured attention economy. Independent studios are merging with international investors to scale, while streamers look abroad for capital to finance original content and new tech integration.

Filmmakers and screenwriters are already adapting. Co-productions with the Middle East are on the rise, as are scripts centering global locations and multicultural characters. While some call this opportunistic, others see it as overdue globalization in a historically Western-centric industry.

As the business of storytelling becomes more global, the creative dynamics of power are shifting. In 2026, who funds Hollywood matters more than ever—and the influence of capital may be the ultimate plot twist of the decade.
