From COVID disruption to commercial demos and vegan recipe creation, San Francisco’s Carolyn Bass crafts a soulful life of service, sound, and SOS-free food.
Who & What:
Carolyn Bass, a San Francisco–based voice-over artist and community volunteer, channels her passions into purposeful projects—from narrating audiobooks to developing health-conscious vegan recipes.
When & Where:
After the global pause of COVID-19 upended her routine, Bass transitioned into voice-over work and holistic wellness in San Francisco, California.
Why it matters:
With a belief in “going with the flow” and a commitment to bettering lives, Bass exemplifies a quietly profound truth: creativity, kindness, and nourishment can coexist—and even thrive—under constraint.
1. A Pandemic Pivot
It was the uncertainty of COVID-19 that nudged Carolyn Bass into the microphone. “I couldn’t control the pandemic,” she recalls, “but I could control my lifestyle.” The health crisis became a catalyst, opening doors to voice-over opportunities and renewed attention to wellness, particularly in partnership with her “legal soulmate,” Alan Wald.
Together, they found joy not just in art but in food. Their SOS-free vegan recipes—free of salt, oil, and sugar—are a medley of nourishment and creativity, earning features on Tuesdays with Thomas and California Balsamics’ website.
2. More Than a Voice
For Bass, voice-over is not merely performance—it’s a prayerful purpose. “Voice-over is more than talent,” she says. “It requires God, belief, patience, and perseverance.” This spiritual scaffolding supports her broader mission: to educate, uplift, and engage.
Her work with Ralph Scott of Squeaky Cheese Productions led to audiobook narrations and her recently completed commercial demo—projects that allow her to “put a smile on people’s faces” while lending voice to meaning.
3. A Life Layered with Purpose
Bass’s world is a harmonious blend of the creative and the charitable. She supports Value Culture, a San Francisco nonprofit founded by Adam Swig, whose family legacy includes the famed Fairmont Hotel. “I attend their events and have donated,” she notes. “Being part of a community is super important.”
Her creative days begin with oatmeal and affirmations, include volunteer work and health education, and often close with time tending to her three cactuses—Harry, Spiklet, and Baby Harry. It’s all part of what she calls “living with intention, not just ambition.”
4. Beyond Recipes and Roles
Bass’s aspirations extend beyond the sound booth. She hopes to grow her own food, following in the footsteps of her grandfather and mother, both of whom are gardeners and wellness enthusiasts. “My grandfather used to say, ‘There’s no time to be sick.’ He only saw a doctor once—for a cold.”
She also supports UCSF’s Care at Home Program, ensuring elderly and chronically ill patients receive high-quality care in the comfort of their homes. “I want people to get the care they deserve,” she says with quiet conviction.
Carolyn Bass may speak in measured tones, but her life resonates with full-hearted intention. Whether it’s a recipe without salt or a line delivered with feeling, each act reflects her guiding principle: let purpose lead, and joy will follow. In a world that prizes hustle and noise, Bass’s voice is a testament to the quiet power of alignment.
